BMX is as popular in Calgary

as it is all over the continent, and there is a fantastic BMX track in Calgary located in the heart of the city at 5520 Blackfoot Trail,SE.

I really enjoy watching the action and there is no doubt in my mind that this is a great sport for youngsters to participate in.

In fact people of all ages participate in this sport.

It is a relatively inexpensive sport in relation to hockey or golf.

An annual membership fee for the Calgary Association is only around $100,00 or if you are 19 years or older @115.00 and that gives you access to all 11 tracks in Alberta and all other CCA tracks across Canada.

But if you just want to check it out first, the Calgary Association will give you a trial membership for just $30.00 which gives you full access to the Calgary facility and even includes insurance coverage.

BMX, which stands for Bicycle Motocross, started back in California in the 1970's, and by now over 150.000 enthusiast of all ages are racing all over the country in organized events through local clubs and associations.

It's a sport the whole family can participate in because races are organized by age groups as well as skill levels, such as Novice, Intermediate or Expert, and races are organized in boys and girls classes as well.

Everything is sanctioned by, and operates under the rules and guidelines of The Canadian Cycling Association which oversees Road Racing, Mountain Bike Racing, BMX, Track racing and Cyclo-Cross.

Bike racing of all kinds has become immensely popular and is showing up in The Olympic Sports, not to mention the Tour-de- France.

Most starters in this sport simply use the 20” street bike they already own by making some adjustments such as adding padding to the frame and removing the chain guard and the kick stand.

The Calgary Association will lend newcomers a full face helmet, which is a requirement, and you just make sure you show up in long pants, a long sleeved shirt, gloves and enclosed shoes ( no sandals or open toed shoes are allowed)

Soon you'll be racing around with your new-found friends just like you see in this video.

There will however be a very festive period from November 26th through the November 29th when the whole city will be wrapped up in the GREY CUP celebrations, as only Calgary can!!
