Calgary Academy Has 100 Staff And More Than 600 Students
Calgary Academy, located in Calgary, Alberta, is an accredited private school.
Originally founded by parents and educators, the school has developed to more than 100 staff and more than 600 students.
The concern of the founders was to serve students who, despite having intellectual capabilities, were failing in traditional community schools.
On a 17 acre campus, the Academy has been a pioneer in developing methods for teaching and reaching hard-to-teach students.
The campus includes more than 30 classrooms, 3 gymnasiums, digital science labs and a wireless computer network.
Advanced facilities are available such as an art studio, a drama theater, a filming set, a music building, a 120 seat multimedia theater, a cafeteria and outdoor sports facilities.
Initially, Calgary Academy was started to teach capable students who were not succeeding in traditional schools.
Although this work continues, an additional transition program has been developed to serve those students who are gifted and who need extra challenges to develop those gifts.
One of the tools used by Calgary Academy is teaching the students to have strong interpersonal skills.
They believe that to have a positive self-image is vital for a student to be successful in school and to survive in life.
To help accomplish this, Calgary Academy fosters a nurturing attitude that fosters positive attitudes, resulting in positive behavior and raised self-esteem.
Key to reaching these goals is a character development program.
It encourages the highest standards of behavior, using a rewards system.
Individual academic and interpersonal successes are recognized publicly.
This approach is evident throughout all of the school’s activities.
All of these strategies are aimed toward helping the student to be successful in today’s world.
Ultimately, the Academy strives to help the students develop skills in key areas:
Superior academic skills
Transferable skills and independent learning strategies
Strong interpersonal skills
High self esteem and self confidence
Knowing that the students will eventually have to use these skills following graduation, all aspects of the academy’s efforts are geared toward helping them to succeed in these areas.
Even the sports programs are designed to work toward these goals.
There are nine sports to choose from, and a high percentage of students are involved in one or more sports.
These general principles are following throughout the sports programs:
Developing fitness
Show no fear
No one likes complaining
Show your stuff
