Calgary Minor Soccer Boasts Over 1600 Teams And 42,000 Players.

Calgary minor soccer is a major city sport, boasting over 1600 teams and 42,000 players within the Calgary Minor Soccer Association.

As one of western Canada’s largest youth sports groups, the Minor Soccer Association is the blanket organization for most of the city’s soccer clubs, private teams, and community-run programs.

Future athletes as young as three years old play soccer, and boys and girls aged fourteen and older compete from late April to late June for a chance to play at the provincial championships.

The major teams in this category are Blizzard, Celtic, Chinook, Eagles, Foothills, and International East Side.

What sets Calgary’s minor soccer programs apart from those of most cities is an emphasis on year-round athletic training.

During the chillier months when nature puts a damper on outdoor soccer games, Calgary minor soccer players continue to hone heir soccer skills at two main locations with indoor soccer grounds.

The larger of these two complexes is the Calgary Soccer Centre at 7000 48th Street SE, which enjoys a dual distinction as the biggest indoor soccer venue in North America and the first facility in Canada designed exclusively for indoor soccer.

Owned and operated by the Calgary Soccer Federation, it opened in January of 1992 with four indoor fields and four outdoor fields.

In 1996, an expansion project added a soft-structure “bubble” building that houses three more large indoor game fields and two miniature indoor practice fields.

Calgary West Soccer Centre at 11014 Bearspaw Dam Road NW is a smaller air-supported structure that has offered players four large indoor fields since opening day in December of 2004.

Built jointly by the Calgary Minor Soccer Association, the city of Calgary, the provincial government, and the federal government, it features a multi-purpose design that not only gives soccer teams a place to play in winter but also supports programs and summer camps for visitors of all ages.

Keeping in shape off-season at these two sites must be a winning strategy, because four youth teams from Calgary competed at the October 2006 Canadian National Soccer Championship.

In all, eight teams from Calgary, including two men’s teams and two women’s teams, qualified for the competition, setting a new record for the city.

In doing so, more than 200 players, coaches, and officials were carrying on a tradition of superior athleticism that dates back more than forty years.

During these four decades, the Calgary Minor Soccer Association has been the training ground for top-rate athletes who have achieved career success after leaving the minor arena.

These include soccer notables Kevin McKenna of Scotland Hearts and Owen Hargreaves of Bayem Munich.

To promote the values of sportsmanship that leads to such success, the Calgary Minor Soccer Association began a role model program for its youthful members.

Three years ago, the organization welcomed Manchester United and Liverpool, two famous professional teams, to its facilities.

Players from these teams shared their knowledge and experience with young soccer players at clinics and special events.

Recent developments in Calgary minor soccer include a plan to unify the four major soccer organizations in Calgary.

By merging the resources of the Calgary Minor Soccer Association, the Calgary United Soccer Association, the Calgary Commercial Men’s Soccer Association, and the Calgary Women’s Soccer Association, members hope to strengthen their ability to reach common goals.

One of their principal aims is to upgrade the quality of the city’s soccer fields so that Calgary can host national competitions in the future.
