Calgary Jewish Academy connects traditional Jewish values to modern educational principles

The Calgary Jewish Academy is a bridge that connects traditional Jewish values to modern educational principles, offering students the very best of the old and the new as vital preparation for their future lives.

Even its origins reflect this integrative approach, as the school represented a modern synthesis of the city’s two oldest Jewish schools.

In 1987, the Calgary Hebrew School and the I.L. Peretz School, both products of the 1920s, merged to form the new Calgary Jewish Academy. Located at 6700 Kootenay Street SW, the academy is a private day school offering educational programs for preschoolers up to ninth graders and credit extension courses for high schoolers.

Students not only receive an excellent education based on the Alberta curriculum but also benefit from a strong foundation in Jewish teachings.

Calgary Jewish Academy provides instruction in Hebrew and Yiddish languages and presents studies of Israel, the Bible, the Mishna, and Jewish history.

An important component in this Jewish learning experience is an attitude of respect toward the different practices and beliefs found in the Jewish community.

Students are encouraged to explore the Jewish experience and reinforce their sense of Jewish identity through holiday celebrations and extracurricular activities.

The importance of honoring the Jewish sensibility is a core value that runs throughout all grade levels, from preschool to ninth grade.

Calgary Jewish Academy strives for early assimilation of creative learning, socialization skills, and Jewish awareness, offering three-year preschool programs that are available on either a three-morning or a five-morning basis.

In addition to conventional subjects such as art, music, computer, library skills, and readiness activities, the school also stresses Jewish themes of Sabbath and festival celebration, Hebrew languages, and Jewish culture and religion.

A supplemental Kinder Arts program encourages growth in the fine arts and takes place in the afternoon.

In elementary school, a bit more than half of the school day is dedicated to the Alberta Provincial curriculum, with the remainder of the time set aside for Jewish studies.

These include Yiddish language and culture, modern Hebrew language, and Tal Am/Tal Sela in Canada.

Thanks to small class sizes, teachers enhance student growth through remedial programs in both English and Hebrew and a rapid track program for students who enroll after Grade One.

Music, French, physical education, art, mathematics, and computer literacy constitute a big part of the elementary school learning experience.

Students in junior high school prepare for their future lives—both in and out of the classroom—by strengthening their foundation in the Judaic and Alberta programs.

Leadership skills develop as students take part in team sports, field trips, extracurricular activities, and the student council.

Specialists in their respective fields teach French, physical education, and other courses that allow graduating students to achieve success in whatever private or public schools they subsequently attend.

The curricula for these grades are continually monitored and improved through yearly program evaluations.

Calgary Jewish Academy also has an in-house professional guidance counselor who optimizes individual student achievement by serving the needs of those at the academy and smoothing the transition for graduates entering high school.

To assist students from non-English-speaking countries, the academy provides regularly scheduled courses in English as a Second Language.

Athleticism, competition, and the performing arts are also key elements of the school, which boasts a large modern gymnasium with a full-length stage and basketball court.

Badminton, chess, Israeli dancing, and choir are just some of the academy’s co-curriculum activities.

The school is home to two Internet-ready computer labs and a computer-accessible library.
