Now let's take a look at some show bands.
The first of the Calgary bands in this category that will come to mind, of course, are the various Calgary Stampede Show Bands because they are always in the Stampede Parade.
There is a lot more to this than you may first suspect. Calgary bands are well established and get a great deal of support from the community.
For example we have : A Band of Outriders which is a 40 piece ensemble of Calgary Show Band alumni. Than we have : The Calgary Stetson Show band winners of 2007 Calgary Exhibition and Stampede Parade Best Band, Auxiliary Competition for Marching Show Bands and other awards as well.
Another component is the
Calgary Round-up Band
which has traveled across Canada and around the world to perform, and in so doing, has won many awards along the way.
And these are all regular contributors to the music and show band scene in and around Calgary.
These Calgary bands are world renowned and have garnered many accolades and trophies since their inception.
Of course they perform daily during the Calgary Stampede for the more than 1 million visitors that attend every year.
They perform on the Stampede grounds but also throughout the city of Calgary at the daily free pancake breakfasts as well as other special events.
Another favorite is the Bishop Grandin High School's band, named
The Bishop Grandin Ghosts Marching Band
The BGMG took the following prizes at the Calgary Stampede: 1) Best Senior Band 2) Best Canadian Band and 3) Best Overall Band
Nice to see todays youth doing so well. Congratulations are in order.
Next among the Calgary bands we find a large number Country bands. Probably the best known is the
Ian Tyson Band
Others include : Quicksilver, Tremblay Brothers,The Deputies and on and on it goes.
During the Alberta International Band Festivals, which was last held in late February 2007, the Jr and Sr High School Bands collected a total of 15 GOLD Awards Jazz, while the Westwinds Community added another 3 GOLD Awards Jazz. This is an indication that Calgarians take music seriously and enjoy a full spectrum.
