East Village Master Plan Has Calgary Buzzing.
The East Village master plan was more than 2 years in the making and judging from it’s reception, incorporates all that is required to put Calgary’s inner city first and foremost as a place to live and visit.
Chris Ollenberger, President and CEO of CMLC (Calgary Municipal Land Corporation)
said "We have completed much of the infrastructure work necessary to prepare the East Village for development and with the visionary master plan in hand, we will be preparing for land sales and to partner with developers by January 2010."
The more than 12 blocks of city land will now begin to be developed into dense, vibrant, mixed-use community with an emphasis on riverfront development, cultural amenities, innovative architecture and character neighborhoods.
Already well over 54,000 Calgarians have expressed a strong interest in living in the future Village!
The slogan is 'the warmest, coolest, newest oldest community in Calgary'.
The area covers 120-acre area east of downtown that is bounded by the Bow River in the north, 9th Avenue S.E. in the south, 3rd Street S.E. in the west and the Elbow River in the east. It has only a few residential properties and is known as an area rife with drug abuse, homelessness and prostitution.
"I think it will be a neighbourhood that we'll all be very proud of in the years to come," said Ollenberger. "It will be a mixed-use community that is walkable, vibrant and offer everything an urban explorer desires: unique architecture, cultural events, activities, shopping, and dining experiences, and a vibrant waterfront," he said.
Only time will tell, but I my humble opinion this plan is an absolute winner,
and will deliver a uniquely vibrant downtown section to an already marvelous city.
This is an indicator of the good things to come:
"Allied Works Architecture and BKDI have been selected to design Cantos’ National Music Centre in Calgary’s East Village'
This will establish the only
National Music Centre
in Canada!
The new building will incorporate the Historic King Edward Hotel Building and iis estimated to cost around $150 million.
Keep an eye on the East Village because things are happening there!
