Heritage Park Calgary is Canada’s “Largest Living Historical Village”

Heritage Park Calgary recreates the prairie life of western settlers from 1864-1914.

The Historical Village is twenty minutes from downtown Calgary and one hundred years behind modern times.

Nestled among cool waters, tall trees, and stately peaks, Canada’s “largest living historical village” recreates the prairie life of western settlers from 1864-1914.

This world of Canada’s past spans 127 scenic acres of Rocky Mountain territory and includes well over 150 exhibits and 45,000 artifacts.

An awesome NEW addition to Heritage Park Calgary is the Gasoline Alley Museum ,which has just Photos: courtesy Heritage Park

been added, and is a hands-on, interactive experience that features an impressive collection of one-of-a-kind vintage vehicles and oil and gas related artifacts donated by local Calgarian Ron Carey.

A typical 19th-century paddle wheeler, steam locomotive, and village bakery convince a visitor’s eyes, ears, and nose that time has been suspended, as do the costumed townsfolk, working blacksmith, and scarlet-garbed Mounties.

There’s a town hall built in 1895 and a church from 1896, as well as an antique amusement park, all authentic and lovingly restored.

The park is open to the public during summer months, October weekends, and the Twelve Days of Christmas, but it is available year-round as an educational, catering, and convention facility.

It’s well worth the trip to experience both the challenges and the charms of life in the past.

To recapture the spirit of those bygone days, visitors to Heritage Park can take advantage of numerous activities, such as enjoying the old-time rides of the antique midway, cruising the Glenmore reservoir aboard the S.S. Moyie paddle boat, or riding the steam locomotive Thomas.

An antique bus and a horse-drawn wagon offer relaxing ways to tour the village, and a walk down Main Street gives guests a close-up look at the village goings-on—and a chance to sample some tasty treats from the ice cream parlor, general store, or bakery.

In addition to these regular activities, Heritage Park hosts numerous special events throughout the year.

The annual Twelve Days of Christmas program includes wagon rides, storytelling, special shopping items, breakfast buffets, and, of course, Santa.

To celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, Heritage Park Calgary presents the Celtic Cowboy, an affair featuring Celtic music and Celtic cowboy food.

The Festival of Quilts brings quilt makers and their art to the park, giving guests a chance to learn about the craft and view more than 800 displayed quilts.

In partnership with the Calgary Winter Festival, the Park hosts home-style luncheons with live music for local seniors.

Special events can also be arranged as private functions, and Heritage Park offers a number of educational, corporate, and catering options for interested parties.

To ensure that the rich heritage of Canadian settlers is not forgotten, instructors conduct a number of classes for children of different grade levels.

Buildings at Heritage Park Calgary can be reserved for functions such as weddings, conferences, company picnics, or Christmas parties, with a variety of menus ranging from western barbecue food to dinner-theater meals.

For example, Millarville Rancher’s Hall lends a rustic atmosphere to occasions, whereas Wainwright Hotel creates a more formal ambiance.

St. Martin’s Church, with its pot-bellied stove and wooden pews, is a charming venue for wedding services, and Gunn’s Dairy Barn offers a casual, western style for parties and a second-story loft for dancing.

Time travel is indeed possible, so visit Heritage Park Calgary and discover how much Canada owes to its early pioneers.

The village is open from 9 am to 5 pm daily from May 19 through September 3 and on weekends only from September 8 through October 8. For more information and a schedule of events, visit Heritage Park Calgary or call (403) 268-8500.
