The Talisman Centre Is
The Largest Sports Facility In Canada.

The Talisman Centre, with five gymnasiums, two tracks, four pools, plenty of training equipment, has been helping the people of Calgary to become stronger and healthier for two dozen years.

Opened in 1983 and formerly known as the Lindsay Park Sports Centre, this multi-use sports and fitness facility at 2225 Macleod Trail South has earned world-class status for its resources, services, and programs.

The centre has a two-fold purpose, serving both as a training and competition site for Calgary’s high-performance athletes and as a sports and fitness arena for recreational sports enthusiasts.

This doesn’t mean that you have to be a professional athlete to take advantage of the facility’s programs.

Talisman Centre offers so many activities and classes that your biggest challenge may be deciding which ones to choose.

Thanks to an expansion project completed in 2004, Talisman Centre is now the largest sports facility in the country, and bigger and better than ever.

It houses five gymnasiums, two tracks, more than 25,000 square feet devoted to weight and cardiovascular training, and 14,000 square feet dedicated to sports medicine and physiotherapy.

Its four pools include two fifty-meter pools, a teaching pool, a 20 X 20-meter diving tank with diving boards and platforms, and a twenty-person hot tub and whirlpool.

Managed by the Lindsay Park Sports Society, the non-profit complex will receive a new roof from the city of Calgary sometime in 2010.

Until then, the unique taco-shaped roof holds its place among Calgary’s architectural icons, just as the complex maintains its impressive spot among the nation’s sports facilities.

Talisman Centre attracts more than one and a half million visitors each year, and it is now the second most commonly used multi-sport facility in North America.

It has been host to about 125 national events and 50 international events, and it has been the training ground for more than 200 Olympic, Paralympic, and World medalists.

Youngsters can take part in a variety of kid-friendly activities, such as badminton leagues, swim clubs, or summer camps that operate on a half-day or full-day basis.

For water lovers, there are general aquatics, diving, water polo, or water safety activities.

Badminton, basketball, and volleyball courts are available, or you can join in on kickboxing, gymnastic, or fencing classes.

Triathlon training takes place both in and out of the water, and track-and-fielders can use the centre’s two tracks to get into shape.

Yoga classes designed for specific needs include ones for runners, golfers, and pregnant women, and there are pre-natal aquatics and gymnastics courses as well.

Other classes can enhance your professional qualifications as much as your personal fitness, giving you the credentials to enter a particular field in the paramedical, fitness, or safety industries.

Programs leading to certification include Emergency Medical Dispatch, Injury and Response, Lifeguard, and National Coaching, and there are courses for re-certification and certification upgrades.

Members can also learn on a one-to-one basis by arranging for private instructors or personal trainers.

Participating in any of these events is easy, as the centre offers a choice of two-month, four-month, summer, annual, and corporate membership packages, as well as special drop-in rates for ongoing activities and late rates for each night’s final ninety minutes.

Fees vary for child, youth, adult, post-secondary, family, couple, and group home memberships.

As a Calgary resource established for the welfare of local residents, Talisman Centre also supports a fee assistance program for those in financial need, and there are child-care services available on-site.
