Back Country Attractions

The top Calgary attractions are those that can be reached by using Calgary as a jumping of point of world re-nowned back country excursions.

And these attractions do not include Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper because these are in a class of their own and I'll deal with these on another page.

We are talking about the back country which gets used for camping both in the summer and the winter months.

In the summer and you can have all kinds of fun and pleasure by hiking, biking and walking as well as using the designated areas for cross country biking and quad activities, rafting as well as fishing.

In the winter of course there are ample opportunities for down- hill skiing and cross-country skiing, as well as snow boarding and ski-doing.

There is around 700 square kilometers of what is referred to as 'high country' and it is located between the Rocky Mountains and the prairie flat lands and is located basically on the west side of highway 22 which runs pretty well parallel to the mountains.

The forestry trunk road ( now also known as Highway 40 ) runs all the way from the Crowsnest Pass area just off Highway 3 north west past Hinton and on to Grand Prairie.

My family and I have criss-crossed this area over the years, long before some of these splendid areas were transformed into National and Provincial Parks such as Kanaskis Country.

There are campgrounds all along this route and you'll experience some fantastic attractions and scenery, so make sure to bring your camera.

Of course you may want to get rid of the dust by making use of some of the historic, but modernized, facilities such as those found in the towns and villages as well as B&B's and ranches along the way..

Here's an example of what you may visit in Cochrane.

And be sure to check Cochrane's Tourism site to be up to date on all the great things happening there!

Or a bit further south you just have a look at this.

On the northern end of the journey you will find: Mayerthorpe
where you will find this place.

These are just a few of the splendid places to relax in this beautiful back country.

There are literally dozens of accommodations and campgrounds and guest ranches to choose from, and if you like I can help you find what you want. Just send your request by completing the form below.

You can arrange with guest ranches to stay awhile and take some horseback rides on trails through some of the most scenic areas in all of Canada.

For those who live a busy lifestyle and need to get away, this is the area to visit and experience the peace and quiet of the back country.

While this is all very wonderful, I realize full well that some folks do not want to roam around the back country, particularly with small children, and for these folks I'd like to recommend some excellent family entertainment.

For those who prefer the nightlife, this page will provide some good information.

Without a doubt you want to check out the Calgary sightseeing page for a more indepth look at what' going on in Calgary.

For example you may have a special interest in airplanes and/or outerspace in which case you will want to follow this link to get the complete picture.

Thank you for visiting and please return often to see the updated version of this site, because we make changes and additions on an ongoing basis.

Better yet, simply click on the orange XML/RSS button in the top left corner of this page, and follow the easy instructions by clicking on "What's an RSS feed?"
