Every Calgary Campground Area Is As Unique As The People Who Visit Them.
For many years my family has used just about every campground, not only in and around Calgary Alberta, but from coast to coast to coast.
This kind of camping experience makes it possible for me to evaluate the existing campground areas around Calgary and particularly west of Calgary both in the various mountain parks and in the forestry areas.
But for the purpose of this page, all this takes a backseat so to speak, because basically I want you to get a feel for those sites that are fairly close to Calgary itself.
The kind of place you might want to make use of when you come
here to see the
Calgary Stampede
for example. So what you need is a campground that is not too far out of the city, so you can comfortably commute to and from the city to take in the daily activities you are interested in. Of course these places, that were not too long ago well outside the city limits, are in some instances now within the city limits, or so close that they will disappear altogether as the expansion continues at a very rapid pace. On the north-side of the city located at:260011 - Symons Valley Rd. NW Calgary AB T3R 1E71 403 274-4574 is the
Symons Valley Ranch
This is a lively campground throughout the year and your stay there will be enjoyable.
The only possible drawback will be the relative closeness of the Calgary airport
Calgary Airport
which may create some noise depending of which runways are being used.
I hasten to add however that I have not camped there myself, but neither have I heard any complaints in this regard.
Next , let's give you a feel for
Riverbend Campground
which is located on the Sheep River near Okotoks, a hop-skip-and-a-jump south of Calgary. It's a peaceful and tranquil setting in the Sheep River valley, and provides great mountain views. Just check the website and you'll see for yourself what's to be enjoyed. Still on the South-side , and well of the beaten path, but within a very comfortable 15 minute drive to Calgary is
Nature's Hideaway
a real family oriented campground, located on the Highwood River, and is as peaceful as it can be.

It's a wonderful place to enjoy the beauty of nature, and yet it is comfortably close to Calgary to allow you to enjoy all that Calgary has to offer, and then come back to your site and really relax by your campfire and listen to the birds and the coyotes. Life is really worth living in a place like that.
Another site to the north of the city and probably about 30 minutes from downtown Calgary is a place called:
Whispering Spruce
and it is located 5 km north of Calgary.
There are well over 100 sites in this campground and all the amenities a traveler needs including a playground for the children
Again I must tell you that it is close to the Calgary Airport which may be a problem for some people.
On the east side of Calgary and only 3 km outside the city limits there is:
Mountain View Camping
The owners know their business and understand what it takes to make your stay as comfortable as it can be. Just look at this quote from the website and you'll realize the experience in providing the travelers with comfortable surroundings. QUOTE:We have made it our primary objective since our inceptionin 1987 to provide the highest level of customer satisfaction coupled with modern facilities and a clean friendly atmosphere.END QUOTE A little further east and "6 kms east of Strathmore on the #1, then 7 kms south: just 40 minutes east of Calgary you'll find
Eagle Lake RV Resort
where you find everything you can ask for and then some, as you will see when you check out their website above.
South of Strathmore and not too far from Carseland you'll find
Calderon Acres
Golf Course, Driving Range and RV Storage
For complete details and directions, please check the website.
Still in this area about 30 minutes SE of Calgary, is the
Carseland Dam Park
Also check out
this page on my site
for details on other nearby parks.
Finally I'll mention the
Bow Valley Park
located west on the Trans Canada Highway near Exshaw and about half way to Banff.
What a marvelous place to spend some time and yet close enough to Calgary, so you don't have to miss anything worthwhile seeing there. There are many more campgrounds in and around Calgary, and if you have the time, you should explore those in the Kananaskis area, all the mountain parks and those both north and south on the Forestry Trunk Road. This selection will get you started in your explorations of this part of Canada, but if you have any special questions, please contact me through the form below,
One last thought about camping....
When we are talking about camping, it's appropriate to mention,
Calgarysummercamps
which are more for the local population, and are a huge business not just in the summer.
Just check it out
