Calgary centres will have you climbing the walls and thoroughly enjoying the experience.

This activity has gained a considerable foothold in the world of recreational sports, and those who want to put their own feet to the test can do so at several places in the city.

These venues offers the setting, equipment, supervision, and training that rock climbers need, regardless of their skill sets and comfort zones.

You can enjoy the great outdoors as you reach for the stars, or you can scale new heights at an indoor site where Mother Nature’s weather never puts a damper on climbing activities.

This is a sport that can be enjoyed by anyone fit enough to pursue it, from children to adults, so it’s also very family-friendly way to have fun.

The Calgary Centre accommodates this family approach, offering programs for all ages and levels of proficiency at two different locations.

Its Chinook facility at 6-7130 Fisher Road SE is open on weekdays and weekends and provides gym equipment for warm-up and cool-down exercises, as well as changing rooms, lockers, and showers.

A forty-foot lead wall, a huge bouldering cave, and hundreds of holds present a variety of routes to explore and problems to solve.

annual, or multi-gym passes.

The centre’s 4 –to-1 climbers-staff ratio is the best in the city, and its facilities can be rented for birthday parties, corporate and team building events, and school outings.

Adult courses include Drop-In Lessons, Beginner Lessons, Building the Basics, and Women on Walls.

Youths can join Saturday Morning Kids Climbs, Junior Clubs, age-specific programs, and sixteen separate camps.

At its Stronghold location at 140 15th Ave NW, the Calgary-Climbing-Centre boasts a choice of more than seventy different routes and thirty-six ropes, with a sixty-foot lead wall that presents a range of challenging terrains.

It also has generous hours of operation during the week and on weekends, as well as exercise facilities, changing rooms, showers, and lockers.

Adult courses include Beginner Lessons, Opening Moves, and Lead Climbing, or you can opt for private instruction.

There’s a convenient mix of youth programs, including Summer Camps geared toward specific age groups and three levels of experience.

For an education-oriented way to enjoy this, visit the University of Calgary between Crowchild Trail (Brentwood Mall) and Shaganappi Trail (Market Mall), just off 24th/32nd Avenue NW.

The university offers a multitude of courses, both at its indoor bouldering wall and at the natural cliffs at Kananaski’s.

Classes are open to the public as well as to students and faculty, and they provide mountaineering, and safety instruction for children, adults, and families.

Check out this site for full particulars.

If you’re up to the demands of the Canadian Rocky Mountains, consider a trip to nearby Cancore, home of Yamnuska Mountain Adventures (YMA).

For the past thirty years, YMA has been offering a modern alternative to the traditional European method of mountaineering.

Year-round operation allows you to pursue this activity in the summer and in the winter, and although most activities take place in the Rockies, there are plans for excursions to Antarctica and Europe.

Beginner and intermediate enthusiasts can select one of the many scheduled programs, and private lessons are available for individuals, families, and groups.

Advanced rock climbers can choose from weekend, five-day, or on-demand activities.
