With fourteen movie theatres located throughout the city and a combined screen force of 117, Calgary offers theatre-goers a chance to view first-run, second-run, foreign, Canadian, and art-house films without straying too far from home.
The city also boasts Alberta’s largest indoor movie theatre and a movie house that rents out its space to patrons for virtually any occasion that can be accommodated in an auditorium with a movie screen.
For first-run films, Calgary movie theatres range from high-volume facilities with more than a dozen screens to smaller houses with one or two screens:

Its 1-screen, 370-seat auditorium is the place to be for first-run films, older films such as Rocky Horror Picture Show, and an annual screening of The World’s Best Commercials.
The theatre also rents out its space for a multitude of public and private functions, including meetings, DVD launches, graduation ceremonies, stand-up comedy acts, live theatre, private screenings of current offerings or patrons’ films, and, yes, weddings. If you’re interested in renting theatre space, call Mike at (403) 283-2222.
In addition to first-run movies, Globe Cinema at 617 8th Avenue SW (403-262-3308) offers independent, foreign, Canadian, and art-house films as well as those it classifies as “unique.”
Periodic midnight screenings, matinees, and special events take place in its two auditoriums, and for the past two years this theatre has been the site for the Calgary Pan Asian Film Festival. It's different among the movie theatres.
If you’d like to join the all-volunteer staff that organizes the annual festival, send an e-mail to volunteer@cpaff.ca
Canyon Meadows Cinema 10, located in Bay 110 at 13226 Macleod Trail SE (403-670-5444) is an independent theatre with 10 screens and stadium seating, offering second-run films at admission prices that are about half of those at major-studio houses.
For kid-friendly family entertainment, the IWERKS Theatre at Telus World of Science at 701 11th Street SW (403- 268-8300) presents regular and IMAX films with an educational focus.
Movies like Bugs! A Rainforest Adventure are shown in the Discovery Dome, Alberta’s largest indoor theatre, and groups can arrange to have specific films shown at times that coincide with their museum visits. If there’s a film you’d like to see, chances are good that you can find it at one of the many Calgary movie theatres.
